An Art Walk Through Alcalá St. and Gran Via: The beginning of Modern Architecture in Madrid:

On a cold windy day, probably the first winter day of the term, we set about to walk and look around some of Madrid’s landmark buildings. This time our walk took us to Alcalá Street and Gran Vía, the core of the transforming city during the first decades of the 20th Century.

Apart from pointing out the origin of the Gran Vía and its role in the urban development of the city, we focused on the changes taking place at this time in art and architecture: The end of revival (historicist architecture) and the birth of the Modern Movement. No other place in Madrid can better illustrate this historic break than the Gran Vía.”
