5th Centenary of the Death of Antonio de Nebrija 1522-2022 During 2022, the 5th Centenary of the death of Antonio de Nebrija is celebrated with a program of very diverse activities for all audiences. Fifteen cultural and political institutions have come together to commemorate this “Event of exceptional public interest”. The goal is to recover and better understand a figure that has gone down in history as a brilliant grammarian, but who was also a great exponent of humanism in Spain . Indeed, Nebrija was the first to create a grammar of a vulgar language. But his pioneer status extended to other areas as well: he was ahead of his time in defending royalties; he opted for a comprehensive education of children, at school and without physical punishment; and he was a courageous defender of freedom of conscience and speech. He devoted his life to knowledge and dissemination, values that we now essentially understand as university values, and that are worth keeping alive today more than ever.
