  • Date: Thursday 2 June 2011
  • Sponsor: Alberto López.
  • Laudatio by Antonio Garrigues Walker.

He studied piano at the Bilbao Conservatory and completed his musical training in France. His professional activity began in 1972. In order to help young musicians, he founded a Piano Competition in Santander, which soon acquired great international prestige.

The infrastructural deficiencies that the Competition itself had highlighted, led him shortly afterwards to act in the field of musical education, creating, successively, the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía, the Fundación Albéniz, the Centro de Archivo y Documentación Albéniz, the Premio Yehudi Menuhin a la Integración de las Artes y la Educación, the Encuentro de Música y Academia, the Instituto Internacional de Música de Cámara de Madrid and the portal Classicalplanet.com, which gives the above a technological and, therefore, universal dimension.
In recognition of the place of national and international reference that her project occupies, Paloma O'Shea has been awarded the Lazo de la Orden de Isabel la Católica, the Orden Cristóbal Colón of the Dominican Republic, the Legion of Honour of the French Government, the Picasso Medal of UNESCO, the Medalla de Honor of the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando of Madrid, the Montblanc Culture Awards and of the Community of Madrid, the Gold Medal of Merit in the Fine Arts, the Spanish Institute of New York, and the Madrid City Council.
