The seminar focuses on the question of the balance between the results of biological evolution and those of cultural evolution in shaping the human condition. Numerous controversies have developed around this problem, centred on the various traits in which the species Homo sapiens seems to differ from other apes. While there are indisputable continuities, there are also substantial differences.
The three domains on which the seminar will focus will be sociality, language and technology as species-specific traits.
We will develop some theories about the evolution of the human mind and its cognitive and emotional capacities related to these three traits.

"This programme is born out of the conviction that the humanities are more necessary than ever in an ever-changing world. Our professors are experts in their fields, but they are also passionate about teaching and interdisciplinary dialogue. Together, we work to train professionals who not only understand the world, but also contribute to transforming it from a humanistic perspective".
Camilo José Cela Conde
"We want to update the humanities to face the crucial dilemmas of our time. The choice of the Anthropocene as a thematic focus is not only pertinent, but urgent, and the approach proposed by Professor Arias Maldonado (which interweaves political philosophy, history of ideas, science and technology studies, and political ecology) provides students with an exceptionally rich and multidisciplinary framework for analysis".
Fernando Broncano
"This seminar represents a first-class contribution to the training of our students. It has equipped them with sophisticated conceptual tools to understand and confront the contemporary ecological crisis from a renewed, critical and committed humanistic perspective. It thus fulfils in an outstanding way the mission of "updating humanism" that gives our Master's its name".
