To face the challenges of the 21st century with a solid humanistic, ethical and reflective basis.
The Master's Degree in Contemporary Humanities: Updating Humanism at Nebrija University, in collaboration with the Colegio Libre de Eméritos, is an academic programme designed to deepen the study of the humanities from a contemporary perspective, integrating the challenges and opportunities of the contemporary world. This master's degree seeks to revitalise classical humanism, adapting it to the needs and contexts of the 21st century, and to encourage critical reflection on culture, society, technology and ethics in the globalised world.
In a world marked by rapid technological evolution, social change and global challenges, the humanities play a key role in understanding and making sense of the complexity of our times. This unique programme offers interdisciplinary training that combines philosophy, literature, history, art, ethics and cultural studies, with the aim of training professionals capable of critically analysing reality and proposing innovative solutions from a humanistic perspective.
The Master's degree focuses on updating humanism, that is, on rescuing the values and principles of traditional humanistic thought and applying them to current problems, such as digitalisation, cultural diversity, sustainability and social justice. Through a theoretical-practical approach, students acquire tools to face the challenges of the contemporary world from an ethical and critical viewpoint.
Main objectives:
- To deepen knowledge of the humanities and their relevance in today's world.
- To foster critical thinking and the capacity for interdisciplinary analysis.
- To update classical humanism, connecting it with contemporary challenges.
- To promote ethical reflection on issues such as technology, globalisation and cultural diversity.
- To train professionals capable of applying humanistic values in various professional fields, such as education, culture, communication and social management.
Programme structure:
The master's degree is structured in modules that address different areas of the humanities, combining theory and practice. Some of the themes explored include:
- Humanism and technology: The impact of digitalisation on society and culture.
- Ethics and globalisation: Moral challenges in an interconnected world.
- Art and contemporary culture: The role of art in the construction of identities and narratives.
- Literature and critical thinking: Analysis of literary texts and their relationship to current issues.
- History and memory: The importance of historical memory in the construction of the present.
The programme is carried out in
two academic years.

We are human: is it a biological or zoological category? It may serve as such in a primary understanding, with only a classificatory purpose. But being human is not only part of a description but also of an evaluation. Our humanity has an inalienable moral dimension: we do not receive humanity through the necessary route of genes, automatically and irresponsibly, but we build it from our freedom as a personal project. That is why a tiger or an eagle cannot be "inhuman" but a human being can: inhumanity is paradoxically one of the possibilities of our human will. This section of the master's degree aims to study the construction of humanity in its various facets as part of our cultural self-invention. Ultimately, we will be able to pinpoint what it is that is irreducibly human.
