Knowledge, cooperation and innovation in the service of tourism
With the aim of collaborating and promoting training and research in Tourism in Spain, consolidated as one of the most relevant sectors from the economic and social point of view, the Inter-University Doctorate in Tourism programme arises from the coordination and cooperation between research teams with experience in the scientific and social knowledge of tourism and in accredited training programmes, including doctoral programmes currently existing in the 12 participating universities.
This cooperation framework is based on the Inter-University Network of Postgraduate Studies in Tourism (REDINTUR), made up of 28 universities with postgraduate studies in Tourism, which has been described in the National Tourism Plan 2012-2015 of the Ministry of Energy, Industry and Tourism, within the section on Talent and Entrepreneurship as a strength, highlighting its operation and training programmes in Tourism.
The intended approach is based on the analysis of the relationships between territories and resources, whose complementarity would open up new perspectives and relationships between tourism agents located in a given geographical area, from whose cooperation innovation processes could emerge, while at the same time improving social, environmental and economic competitiveness. This system of interaction, relations and flow of knowledge, in which the public and private spheres converge, makes innovation a key concept of the Programme being presented.

Access to the doctoral programme
The criteria for access to the PhD programme are detailed in the following section, and are those established by law for this purpose. Therefore, any candidate who meets these criteria would have legal access to the programme.
- The recommended academic profile for students wishing to access this Doctoral Programme is that of graduates in studies related to the knowledge of Tourism, from the fields of economics, business, sociology and geography. In particular, it is aimed at graduates in Tourism, Economics, Business Administration and Management, Geography and Sociology and related degrees in competences to those listed. With regard to Official Master's Degrees, the Programme is particularly aimed at graduates in the Official Master's Degree in Tourism Management and Planning, or equivalent, taught by the universities that make up REDINTUR.
- Students who do not meet the access profile, coming from master's degrees in the branches of Social and Legal Sciences and Arts and Humanities, not specialised in tourism training, will necessarily have to take specific training complements defined in the section Training complements.
- For those students who have taken master's degrees in the field of Engineering and Architecture, the academic committee of the doctoral programme will decide on the additional training that must be taken from among those indicated in the corresponding section.
In terms of skills, the recommended entry profile refers to students with the ability to understand and solve problems in the field of tourism companies, organisations and destinations, as well as the ability to evaluate the behaviour of economic agents in this sector of activity. Likewise, knowledge of data analysis and planning tools and techniques will be very useful for the programme.
In relation to the languages appropriate to the entry profile, these will be those that are official in the universities that make up this Master's Degree in Tourism and in which the student is enrolled.
Organisation
According to Royal Decree 576/2023, of 4 July, which amends Royal Decree 99/2011, of 28 January, which regulates official doctoral studies:
- Full-Time Students:
The dedication regime for students of the Inter-University Doctoral Programme in Tourism will preferably be full-time. The duration of the doctoral studies will be a maximum of four years full-time, counting from the date of enrolment of the doctoral student in the programme until the date of deposit of the doctoral thesis. - Part-time students:
The academic committee responsible for the programme may authorise part-time doctoral studies. In order to apply for this modality, candidates will have to accredit some kind of work activity. In this case, such studies may have a maximum duration of seven years from the date of enrolment in the programme to the date of submission of the doctoral thesis.
In general, the percentage of part-time doctoral students in this programme should not exceed 30% of the total number of students enrolled. This percentage operates at each of the participating universities and not globally.
A part-time PhD student is defined as a student who carries out a job or activity (whether paid or unpaid) that prevents him/her from devoting more than 60% of his/her time to the doctoral programme. To apply for part-time admission to the PhD Programme, the candidate must accredit this situation, which must be evaluated and authorised by the Academic Committee of the PhD Programme.
A permanent change in the working conditions or occupation of a part-time doctoral student that no longer prevents him/her from doing the doctorate on a full-time basis must be communicated to the tutor, who will proceed with the procedures for the change of modality of the doctoral student.
Doctoral students may also request temporary leave of absence from the programme for up to two years. This request must be addressed and justified to the academic committee responsible for the programme, which will decide whether or not to grant the request.
