Doctorate for leading communication in the digital age
In a media ecosystem characterised today by timelessness, ubiquity, connectivity and continuous interaction between creators and users, new dynamics have been imposed in which not only the value, originality or treatment of the content, but also its adaptability to digital devices and media, have become relevant.
This framework has led to the resignification of the media and also of its professionals, who face renewed processes and routines whose training, linked to developments in creative, technological and commercial innovation, requires constant updating and deepening. In fact, in the last decade, the most offered professional profiles in the field of communication have been digital.
In this context, broad and at the same time specialised training is necessary, in direct observation and contact with the industry. The rise of communication and the accelerated changes imposed on it by the digital transformation reinforce this training requirement in view of the transcendence that its exercise represents for society, companies and institutions. Nebrija University, as a university institution committed to the mission of helping to understand the current demands and train future professionals to meet them with solvency, offers this doctorate whose lines of research focus on:
- Innovation in digital production, marketing and distribution
- Digital and media literacy in connected environments.
- Inclusion and representation in communication: gender, age and diversity.
"At the Faculty, we believe in communication and arts that are capable of integrating knowledge, creativity and commitment to understand the global world and contribute to transforming it".

Access to the
PhD programme
The criteria for access to the PhD programme are detailed in the following section, and are those established by law for this purpose. Therefore, any candidate who meets these criteria would have legal access to the programme. In any case, a recommended access profile is defined below, which fits in with the priority lines of research defined in the programme:
In general, the provisions of Royal Decree 576/2023, of 4 July, which regulates official doctoral studies, shall apply to access and admission to doctoral studies.
The objective admission criteria will be linked to academic requirements, other merits related to research and accredited knowledge (B2) of a foreign language commonly used in the scientific community to which the doctoral programme belongs (English).
A general criterion for admission is the presentation of a proposal for a doctoral thesis project related to the programme's line of research, describing the objectives, justification of the affiliation to a line of research, methodology, expected results, resources required for its preparation, and the proposed tutor and thesis supervisor.
The PhD Academic Committee will assess the affinity of the proposal with the programme's line of research, its viability and scientific interest, and the availability of the research staff associated with the programme.
The recommended academic profile for students wishing to access the PhD programme in Innovation in Digital Communication and Media is that of students who have graduated from a degree in the field of Communication: Journalism, Audiovisual Communication, Advertising and Public Relations, Marketing or Digital Communication. However, students coming from master's degrees specialising in communication and whose syllabus structure does not contain research subjects, including the TFM, will have to take the specific training complements defined in section 3.4.
The Academic Committee of the programme, in accordance with the access qualification, must determine which training complements are appropriate for each student, for which purpose subjects from the university Master's degrees that give direct access to this doctoral programme may be used. In any case, these complements will be compulsory for those students who access the programme with only a graduate degree of 300 ECTS or more, which does not include research credits in their syllabus.

Employability
In a society where information has become an exchange value, the communication sector is not only booming, but is also crucial to guarantee, on the one hand, the quality of the flow of information that floods the digital ecosystem and, on the other, the legitimacy of those who ensure this quality.
In this sense, the employability of those who specialise in the fields of the whole process, with special emphasis on digitisation, is finding professional opportunities that are proliferating due to the needs of an environment that demands specialists in the field of communication. Training in digitisation and scientific dissemination are new opportunities for professionals in the communication sector. These opportunities arise in the professional sphere - with the renewal of professional digital skills that allow innovation, transformation and adaptation of processes to the digital environment - but also in the academic sphere, where there is a demand for specialised professionals who know how to provide university students with the knowledge and skills that the changing world of work demands of them in order to be efficient in the digital environment.
New horizons are also opening up in the combination of academic research and the continuous debate on the transformation demanded by all professions related to communication, and which guarantee new possibilities for those who acquire a doctorate in innovation in digital communication and media.
